The POINT Conference

From June 24 to 25, 2024, the POINT Conference was held in Sarajevo, where our Executive Director, Alexandra Tóthová, was one of the panelists in the discussion panel titled „EU Elections – What Happened and Why.“

She highlighted that Slovakia is one of the most Eurosceptic countries in the EU, with society being extremely polarized in the run-up to the European Parliament elections. During the campaign, the government focused on blaming the EU for prolonging the war in Ukraine and advocated for reducing Slovak support for the conflict.

She warned that the Eurosceptic regimes in Slovakia and Hungary present a danger to overall EU support in the region.

She also called for increased EU efforts to tackle disinformation in Slovakia, emphasizing the need to strengthen the capacity of fact-checking civil society organizations, which are currently underfunded.

Also, the panel concluded with a discussion on the need for increased EU support for projects aimed at combating disinformation, thereby enhancing the accountability of major tech platforms.
